Creed Aventus: what it smells like, and how to try it first

Some fragrances are easy to describe. Creed Aventus is not one of them, because the thing people remember about it, a bright fruit over something smoky, is the result of layers that arrive at different times.

What is actually in it

The catalogue record we sell from lists it as a 2010 release from France, by Erwin Creed and Jean-Christophe Hérault, built in three layers.

• Top: bergamot, blackcurrant, apple, lemon and pink pepper.
• Heart: pineapple, patchouli and Moroccan jasmine.
• Base: birch, musk, oak moss, ambroxan and cedarwood.

Its main accords, strongest first, read: fruity, sweet, leather, woody and smoky.

Why the pineapple gets all the attention

Pineapple sits in the heart, which is the part of a fragrance you meet after the opening has burned off and before the base settles in. That timing is why so many people describe Aventus as fruity: the pineapple arrives once the lemon and bergamot have thinned out, and it is still there while the woods are warming up underneath.

Where the smoke comes from

Birch is the reason people reach for words like leather, smoke and tar. Paired with oak moss and cedarwood it gives the dry, slightly ashy floor that stops the fruit reading as sweet. Ambroxan and musk sit under all of it and are the part most likely to stay on your shirt collar.

Who tends to get on with it

Fruit over smoke is a particular taste, and it is worth being honest that not everyone enjoys it. It tends to suit people who find plain citrus fragrances too thin and plain woods too serious. If you already know you dislike smoky bases, the birch here will not change your mind.

Is Aventus a summer or a winter fragrance?

It is worn in both. The fruit reads fresher in heat and the birch and woods read warmer in cool weather, so most people find it works across the year rather than belonging to one season.

What is the difference between the bottle and a decant?

Nothing about the liquid. A decant is the same fragrance poured into a smaller glass atomiser, so you can try it properly before buying a full bottle. A decant is never sold as sealed; the bottle it came from was.

Does it smell the same on everyone?

No. Skin chemistry, the weather and even what you wore the day before change how the same fragrance reads. That is the case for every perfume, and it is the argument for trying a small amount first.
